MV Ribbon (74,522 DWT ran aground approximately 1.2 nm off the breakwater whilst entering the Karaikal Port (India). The vessel was laden with 67,746 MT of coal in bulk, 529 MT of Heavy Fuel Oil and 25 MT of Fuel Oil bunkers onboard. Based on the on site assessment, SMIT Salvage refloated the vessel, by lightering part of the cargo of coal with the assistance of a dedicated geared lightering vessel and local harbor tugs.
This method by lightering part of the cargo gives surety for safe and controlled refloating operation. With the salvage team in place, the casualty was refloated within one week after the commencement of the refloating operations and herewith preventing any damage to the environment.
